Overnight French Toast Casserole
Ingredients
For the Casserole:
1 loaf French bread (or brioche/challah), cut into 1-inch cubes
8 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of salt
For the Crumb Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions
Prep the Bread:
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Spread the cubed bread evenly in the dish.
Mix the Custard:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Combine:
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Press down lightly to ensure all bread is soaked.
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 6 hours).
Make the Crumb Topping:
In a medium bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Cut in the cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Cover and refrigerate until ready to bake.
Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the soaked bread.
Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
Serve:
Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Drizzle with maple syrup and enjoy!
