Baked Mac and Cheese
Ingredients:
For the Pasta:
8 oz elbow macaroni
Salt for boiling water
For the Cheese Sauce:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Topping:
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
Cook the Pasta:
Cook the macaroni according to package directions in salted boiling water. Drain and set aside.
Make the Cheese Sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes to create a roux (paste).
Slowly add the milk to the roux, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
Stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheese until melted and smooth. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
Combine the Pasta and Cheese Sauce:
Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine, making sure the pasta is fully coated in the creamy sauce.
Prepare the Topping:
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, melted butter, and Parmesan cheese. Stir to coat the breadcrumbs evenly.
Assemble and Bake:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb topping evenly over the macaroni.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Serve:
Let the mac and cheese cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the cheesy, crispy goodness!
This mac and cheese is creamy, comforting, and the perfect balance of cheesy and crispy!
